The idea of collecting donations in small offering boxes goes back to the early 1800s, when women formed “mite” or “cent” societies to support church projects and foreign missionaries. Thankofferings have always been, and still are, a tangible way to say thank you to God and show gratitude for God’s blessings.

Read “Money memories”
In her 2022 Gather magazine article, the Rev. Lisa Smith writes about her earliest memories of money, from collecting empty aluminum cans for cash, to seeing her mom place a check in the offering plate each Sunday.
Smith also describes how she and her husband discuss the topic of money with their children. She writes, “…there’s another side of money that I want them to know….giving is what makes you whole.”
