As part of Women of the ELCA’s global engagement trip to Arusha and Meru, Tanzania, Valora Starr, director of discipleship; Eva Yeo, director of membership; and Nola Smith, a WELCA participant; join women and girls from the African Girls Scholarship & Mentorship Program at a worship service in July 2025 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church Tanzania Diocese of Meru Cathedral in Liganga, Tanzania. ELCA International Women Leaders Scholars Naomi Mbise of Tanzania, and Dora Houma and Marina Fomgbami of Cameroon launched the scholarship and mentoring program after returning to their home countries following their graduations from ELCA colleges.
The program is operated in partnership with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cameroon and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, with additional support from Women of the ELCA and other ministries.
